FDM 3D-printed small gifts: how to prepare a keychain or playful souvenir
What is an FDM 3D-printed small gift?
An FDM 3D-printed small gift is a keychain, desk mini, playful branded toy-style piece, or other souvenir you can carry or keep on a desk, built by fused deposition modeling. At Regent Gifts, “3D gifts” means this kind of small FDM order. It is not an award, and it is not a large exhibition piece. Minimums, prices and lead times follow the quote confirmed for that order.
What is FDM 3D printing?
FDM (fused deposition modeling) heats a thermoplastic filament, extrudes it through a nozzle along a path, and lets each layer cool and set. The shape comes from a digital model. It suits a small custom piece that needs a distinct three-dimensional outline, when you also want a physical sample to check scale and feel. FDM is a different process from resin printing and powder sintering. This page covers FDM only.
Typical FDM traits: layer lines depend on layer height and finishing; thin or overhanging features may need supports; sanding or painting can change the surface. Whether Regent Gifts can take a given size or finish is confirmed in the reply to that enquiry.
Which filaments are common? (overview)
Common FDM thermoplastics include PLA, ABS and PETG. The notes below are a general industry overview, not a Regent Gifts stock list:
- PLA: easier to print, and usually milder in odour. It suits desk minis and ordinary small souvenirs. Heat and impact resistance are usually below engineering-grade materials.
- ABS: relatively tougher and more heat-resistant. It suits keychains or toy-style pieces that are handled more often. Printing is more sensitive to ambient temperature.
- PETG: a middle ground, tougher than PLA, often used when a small piece needs more impact resistance than PLA.
Which material, colour and surface finish are available depends on capacity and the file for that order. Ask us for a quote.
Where do FDM small gifts fit?
Small FDM custom gifts are often used for:
- Corporate gifts and client thank-yous: branded keychains, desk minis, playful toy-style souvenirs.
- Events, openings and product launches: small takeaway gifts, booth giveaways, or a mini model of a product.
- Internal events: a small 3D piece for a forum, a launch or a team event.
- Sample checks: a physical small piece to confirm scale and feel before a production run or tooling.
If you need a smooth see-through award for a stage presentation, a large exhibition display, or a large run of flat tokens, the FDM small-gift line is probably the wrong fit. See “Not this” below. For planning several gift types in one order, see corporate gifts.
What should a small-part design watch for?
FDM small parts are compact and detailed. Plan the structure and how the piece is carried before you send the file:
- Keychain or split ring: leave a hole large enough for a ring. A wall that is too thin around the hole can snap.
- Wall thickness and thin posts: very thin walls, very thin posts and sharp corners break more easily on a small part. Leave a solid wall and use rounded corners.
- Small type and logos: raised or recessed type that is too fine may not form completely. Enlarge the stroke, or mark the brand with a label or paint.
- Colour and surface: more than one colour, or a near-smooth look, usually means sanding, filling or painting. Time and cost depend on the file.
- Layer lines and supports: layer lines are normal for FDM. Removing supports from an overhang can leave marks. Decide whether that is acceptable.
On strength: an FDM part is bonded layer to layer. A pull across the layers is usually weaker than a pull along the extrusion path. These small pieces suit carrying, desk display and light handling. They are not structural parts for a heavy load. Whether a piece can be made, and whether a sample is arranged, follows the quote confirmed for that order.
Which design files should you send?
FDM needs a usable 3D model. Send the following together:
- Format: a common mesh such as STL or OBJ. If you only have an engineering drawing, confirm first whether it can become a printable model.
- Size and orientation: finished size at small-part scale, which face sits down or how the keychain is worn, and whether scaling is acceptable.
- Walls and detail: the ring hole, thin posts, the height of raised type, and whether thin walls are solid enough. Features that are too small may not form completely.
- Brand assets: logo vectors and brand colours. If you need paint or a label, add a colour layout and where it sits. For a general comparison of screen printing, pad printing, offset and UV, see gift logo printing. Whether one FDM piece can use those methods is confirmed from the file for that order.
A chat screenshot or a flat JPG is usually not enough to produce from. A reference image is for discussion only. It does not mean a third-party design can be copied.
Not this: when the FDM small-gift line is the wrong fit
The FDM scope of this page is small, playful, toy-type souvenirs, such as keychains. These cases usually need another route:
- Awards and stage presentations: for an award with a smooth internal three-dimensional image, consider laser-etched crystal. See crystal awards. This FDM page is not an award catalogue.
- Large exhibition displays: big, heavy display pieces are outside this small-part scope.
- Large runs of flat tokens: FDM is usually a poor fit for handing out many thin flat pieces.
- Layered see-through stands: for a desk stand or a crest in separate colours, consider acrylic. See the acrylic plaque guide.
The comparison is for orientation only. It does not claim that Regent Gifts stocks those lines or accepts every job. The main scope remains small FDM custom pieces.
Checklist before you ask about an FDM small gift
Before you ask Regent Gifts for a quote, it helps to have:
- The occasion, the audience and the use: keychain, desk mini, event giveaway, or another small piece.
- An STL or OBJ model, or an engineering drawing that can be converted; the finished size; the ring hole or how it is worn.
- A material direction, such as PLA, ABS or PETG, and the surface you want: keep the layer lines, sand, or paint.
- A quantity range and a budget range, and whether you want a sample first.
- Logo vectors and final wording, if there is a label or print.
Minimum quantity, unit price, sample cost and the number of days all follow the quote confirmed for that order. Ask us for a quote.

FDM 3D-printed small gifts: common questions
- What is an FDM 3D-printed small gift?
- An FDM 3D-printed small gift is a custom three-dimensional piece made by fused deposition modeling, laying down thermoplastic filament layer by layer. Examples are keychains, desk minis and playful branded toy-style souvenirs. When Regent Gifts says 3D gifts, it means this kind of small FDM piece.
- Does the FDM small-gift line include awards or giant display pieces?
- No. This page covers small, playful, toy-type souvenirs. Stage awards and giant exhibition displays are not the focus. For awards, the crystal pages are a separate comparison.
- Do I have to supply an STL or OBJ?
- FDM production usually needs a usable 3D model. STL and OBJ are the most common. If you only have a flat drawing, confirm first whether it can be modelled. A chat screenshot is generally not ready to print from.
- How do I choose roughly between PLA, ABS and PETG?
- PLA leans toward display pieces and easier printing. ABS leans toward tougher, more heat-resistant pieces, such as a keychain that is handled often. PETG sits between them and is tougher than PLA. The final material follows the file, the use and capacity for that order. This page does not claim what is in stock.
- What are the minimum, the price and the lead time?
- The minimum, unit price and lead time for an FDM small gift depend on size, material, quantity, finishing and whether a sample is needed. Regent Gifts does not list one quantity or one number of working days on this page. The actual terms follow the quote confirmed for that order. Ask us for a quote.
