Custom USB Gift Knowledge Q and A

💡 Quick Summary (TL;DR):

This guide covers essential technical specs for custom USB flash drives: popular capacities from 4GB to 128GB; differences between USB 2.0 (480Mbps) and USB 3.0 (5Gbps); and OTG (Type-C) mobile solutions. We use original Grade A chips from Toshiba and SanDisk, avoiding counterfeit "expanded" drives to ensure data security for corporate gifts. Compatible with iPhone 15 and latest Android devices.

1. What are the different USB flash drive (nand flash) storage capacities?

A: Available capacities include 128MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB.

2. What are the commonly used USB flash drive chips?

A: In recent years, 128MB and 512MB capacities are rarely considered due to their small storage size. While 1GB and 2GB are similarly priced, 32GB remains relatively expensive for gift purposes. The most popular USB flash drive capacities are 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB. Since 2GB and 4GB are similarly priced, 4GB has become increasingly popular in recent years.

3. How much data can 1GB store?

A: Let's start with a basic computer lesson. 1GB equals 1 gigabyte, which is equivalent to 1024MB (megabytes). Therefore, 512MB is half of 1GB (1024MB).

4. What can you do with 1GB?

A: For reference, a 2-hour 720p movie after compression typically takes up 800-1000MB, meaning 1GB can store approximately one such movie (depending on compression ratios and other factors). A 4GB drive can store about 3 movies. For photos, using iPhone photos as a reference (about 3MB per photo), 1GB can store approximately 300 photos.

5. What chips are used in the products?

A: First, we use chips from brands such as Hynix, Hitachi, Toshiba, Micron, Intel, and SanDisk. Samsung chips are generally not used unless specifically requested by customers due to their higher price. As a gift product, we believe in finding the right balance between price and quality. Using expensive materials doesn't necessarily mean better quality, as the performance of a USB flash drive also depends on the controller board. Even with high-quality chips, poor controller board quality can lead to quick failure.
Ultra-thin chips and OTG USB solutions primarily use Toshiba or SanDisk chip solutions. (Updated 2023-11-10)

6. What is a counterfeit USB flash drive?

A: Some unscrupulous merchants purchase low-capacity chips (nand flash), such as 64MB or 128MB, and use software to modify the chips to deceive the system into showing them as larger capacities like 8GB or 16GB, profiting from the price difference. Since they appear to work normally initially, the issue is often only discovered when the drive is nearly full and previous files disappear. By that time, the company has already paid in full, making it difficult to resolve the issue, and the purchasing staff may face blame.

7. Can counterfeit USB flash drives be used?

A: Because these counterfeit chips are modified from real chips, they still have their original storage capacity. However, since they've been modified to deceive the system, the system allows storing files larger than the actual capacity. In reality, the system is just overwriting the same location repeatedly, which is why files may become unreadable or disappear.

8. Does a 1GB USB flash drive have exactly 1024MB?

A: Due to manufacturing variations, each drive may have slightly different actual capacity. For example, a 1GB drive might have 1010MB (for example). This is not unique to USB flash drives - computer hard drives (HDD) have the same issue. It's an unavoidable manufacturing variation.

9. How to choose a USB flash drive gift supplier?

A: Choose a local company, especially a gift supplier that has been in the market for a long time. For example, Regent Gifts has been specializing in USB gift production since 2007, serving thousands of customers with extensive experience.

10. What is an OTG USB flash drive?

A: OTG stands for On-The-Go, meaning it's a USB flash drive that can be used with mobile phones. The latest OTG drives mainly use USB-C, which is compatible with both new Android devices and Apple products like iPhone 15, iPad, and Mac computers.

Most OTG USB flash drives come with both a standard USB-A port and USB-C. Some even have a 3-in-1 design, featuring USB-C, USB-A, and Micro USB ports, making it convenient for users to exchange data between three different types of devices.

11. Why does a 32GB USB flash drive have less than 32GB?

A: Computers use binary, so operating systems calculate capacity in increments of 1024:
1KB=1024Byte
1MB=1024KB
1GB=1024MB

While hard drive manufacturers calculate capacity in increments of 1000:
1KB=1000Byte
1MB=1000KB
1GB=1000MB

This difference in calculation methods is why the USB flash drive capacity appears "reduced" in the system.

12. What's the difference between USB-C and traditional USB-A?

A: USB-C is a new USB interface standard introduced in 2014 that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Compared to traditional USB-A, USB-C has several key differences:

Insertion Method: USB-C is reversible, unlike USB-A which can only be inserted one way. This makes it more convenient to use and easier to connect.

Size: The USB Type-C connector is smaller than the USB Type-A connector, making it more portable. USB Type-C is about one-third the size of USB Type-A.

Power Output: USB Type-C supports higher power output, making it suitable for more devices like laptops and smartphones.

Data Transfer Speed: USB Type-C supports higher data transfer speeds, up to 40Gbps, which is faster than USB Type-A.

Functionality: USB Type-C supports many extended functions, including interchangeable display ports, audio output, fast charging, and Thunderbolt 3 technology.

Overall, the USB Type-C interface offers more advantages compared to traditional USB Type-A, including smaller size, better portability, higher power output, and faster data transfer speeds. It also supports many new features and technologies, making it suitable for more devices.

13. What's the difference between USB2.0 and USB3.0?

A: The main difference lies in read and write speeds. USB 2.0 has a theoretical speed of 480Mbps (megabits per second), while USB 3.0 has a theoretical transfer rate of 5Gbps (gigabits per second). Theoretically, USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than USB 2.0. However, whether it's USB 2.0, 3.0, or the newer USB 3.2, the actual transfer speed is affected by various factors such as memory read/write speed, file size, and product quality, making the actual speed much lower than the theoretical value. The theoretical value only indicates the speed limit of different USB specifications and doesn't mean all USB flash drives can achieve that speed.

Visually, USB 2.0 ports are black, while USB 3.0 ports are blue.

14. How to use a card USB flash drive?

A: For a card USB flash drive, gently bend the front side in opposite directions on both sides, and the USB connector will automatically flip out.
